Former Giddings XC runner competes as Texas Tech wins Big 12 Title

Former Giddings cross country runner Michelle Guzman competed with the Texas Texas Red Raider's cross country team to win the 2009 Big 12 Women's Conference Title. Guzman is a 2007 graduate of Giddings High School and is in her junior year at Tech.

The Red Raider's team claimed the conference title for the second year in a row, cruising past tough competition from No. 3 Colorado, No. 19 Iowa State, and No. 26 Baylor. The Lady Raiders are ranked at No.14 in the nation.

Guzman finished in 26th place, out-running a host of Big 12 contenders and posting one of her best times of the season 22:33.96. Five of Michelle's teammates finished in the Top 15 and received Big 12 honors.



XC runners take top honors at district meet Wednesday

Both the men's and ladies Cross Country teams qualified for Regionals at the District 25-3A meet on Wednesday, garnering top honors in both varsity divisions. The Region 4 Championships will be held in San Antonio on Nov. 7th at the Brooks City Air Base.

The ladies team won the district championship with senior runner Taylor Blasig claiming the individual title. The men's team finished in second place, Erik Gaitan came away with the individual crown for the Buffs.

Other top finishers for the ladies were Isabel Bahena (5th), Alejandra Bahena (8th), Elise Keistman (12th), Irisol Lopez (14th), Vivian Hernadez (15th) and Alyssa Sanders (17th).
 
On the men's side other finishers were Kyle Holman (3rd), Roman Delgado (7th), Dyelan Fonville (23rd), Charles Grube (32nd), Steven Vaclavik (33rd).

The JV girls were the district runner-up with Yessinia Segura winning the individual championship followed by Meredith Albers (4), Kasey Campos (6), Hayley Albers (12) and Laura-Kate Placke (22).

The Buffaloes Cross Country teams hosted the 7th annual Giddings Invitational Cross Country meet Thursday, Oct. 15th at the Lee County Airport. 

Both Women's and Men's teams finished as the first 3A teams in their divisions.

The Lady Buffs were led by Isabel Bahena, Elise Keistman, Taylor Blasig, and Irisol Lopez. The Men were led by Erik Gaitan, Roman Delgado, Kyle Holman, and Dyelan Fonville.

The meet benefited the "Soles4Souls" non-profit organization that supplies gently used shoes to kids in over 61 countries - all over the world.  Runners were asked to donate their used running shoes and responded by donating over 100 pair for the cause. 

The next meet for the Buffs is Oct. 28th at the District Championships in LaGrange.

Cross Country

GHS Cross Country teams competed at the Texas A & M @ Corpus Christi Islander Splash on Saturday and ran in the 5A divisions.  The top varsity ladies were Taylor Blasig, Isabel Bahena, Alyssa Sanders and Vivian Hernandez.  The top varsity men were Erik Gaitan, Kyle Holman, Roman Delgado and Dyelan Fonville.  Also, the top JV ladies were Meredith Albers, Yesenia Segura and Irisol Lopez.  The top JV men were Joan Tello and Steven Vaclavik. 

 

Their next meet will be this Saturday, October 3rd in Round Rock.

 

Volleyball

The Lady Buffs Varsity volleyball team defeated Smithville in District play on Tuesday, September 22nd; 25-10, 25-15, 25-27, 25-21. All three teams lost to 4A Elgin on Friday, September 25th.

 

The teams traveled to Bellville on Tuesday, Varsity fell to the Lady Brahmas in three games; 16-25, 23-25, 20-25.

 

Their current district record is 1-1 in District and 13-7 overall.

 

The Lady Buffs JV beat Smithville in three games; 24-26, 25-16, 25-23.

The Lady Buffs Freshman team beat Smithville in three games also. 

 

Football

The Giddings Buffalo Freshman and JV Football teams traveled to Elgin last week where the Freshman team lost 35-24 and the JV team won 19-6.

The Giddings Buffalo Varsity Football team hosted the Elgin Wildcats at GHS Stadium where they played on a very wet and muddy field and won 26-3.

This week is HOMECOMING and the Buffaloes will be hosting Waco-Robinson at GHS Stadium.

Volleyball: Lady Buffs Varsity traveled to Madisonville tournament on Thursday, Sept. 10th defeating Crockett, Caney Creek and Sealy.

Friday, Sept. 11th they defeated 4A El Campo in 4 games 25-15, 21-25, 25-18 and 25-22. 

Varsity traveled back to Madisonville on Saturday Sept. 12th where they competed in the championship bracket.  They were defeated by Anderson and Caney Creek. Their record stands at 11-4.

 

The Lady Buffs JV defeated El Campo on Friday in three games and the Freshman lost to El Campo in two games.

 

Cross Country: were supposed to run in the Texas A&M Invitational but due to rain it was cancelled.  Other teams got together at a different park competing with 5A schools and colleges.  Even with very wet and muddy conditions the girls and boys each got 2nd place in the high school division.  The girls were led by Taylor Blasig, Isabel Bahena and Elise Keistman.  The boys were led by Eric Gaitan, Kyle Holman and Roman Delgado.  Their next meet is Sept. 26th in Corpus Christi.

 

Football: The Giddings Freshman and JV Football teams hosted the Wharton tigers at GHS stadium.  The Freshman team lost in the last few seconds of the game 6-0.  The JV team won holding the Wharton tigers to only 6 points with a final score of 42-6. The Giddings Buffalo Varsity Football team traveled to Wharton where they won 35-6.

Giddings runners place 1st at Texas State meet

The Giddings girls Cross Country team placed 1st at the Texas State University Invitational meet which was held at Gary Job Corp in San Marcos this past weekend. The team finished with only 52 points, the next closest competitor was St. Andrews with 68 points.

All six runners finished in the Top 20 with Isabel Bahena placing second overall in the 1A-3A division.
