Lady Buffs shock Sealy, advance to Area round

Tuesday, February 12, 2013

Ashton Allee made a clutch free-throw with 2.5 seconds left on the clock to secure a 39-38 Bi-District win over Sealy, Monday night February 11th, in Schulenburg.

The Lady Buffs fought back from a four point deficit late in the game to get the win. With the game tied at 38 Sealy drove down the court and put up a shot in a attempt to avoid overtime and get the win. The shot was unsuccessful and Allee, who was in position to get the defensive rebound, was fouled.

Sealy was in foul trouble with 10+ violations and Allee went to the free throw line with a "double-bonus."  Allee missed her first free throw but sank the second which gave Giddings a one point advantage.  With just over 2 seconds on the clock Sealy was forced to throw up a mid-court "Hail Mary," which fell far short of the bucket.

“Despite some miscues, the girls didn’t let up.  It was a great game and an outstanding win for the Lady Buffs.  The defense made some big plays throughout the game but especially in the last two minutes to pull out the come from behind win,” said Coach Albers.

Sealy had entered the playoffs as the second place team from District 25.

Brittany Richard and Ashton Allee led the scoring with 16 and 14 points respectively.  Others contributing on offense and defense were Becky Blakney with 6, Tori Moore, 2, Genesis Holmes, 1, Sarah Owens, Hannah Michel, Summer Korzekwa, Tiara Mack, Madison Smith, Cristina Nolen, Tameya Canada and Sydney Smith.

Student assistants Ceaira Tolliver, Courtney Richard and Audrey Fain helped with stats and video.

The Lady Buffs are now 20-14 on the season and will advance to the Area Play-off Round versus San Antonio Sam Houston this Friday, February 15th, at 6:30 P.M. The site for the match-up has not yet been finalized.

Sam Houston finished in first place in District 28 and received a Round 1 bye.
