A local three-year-old was pronounced dead Saturday afternoon
after police were called to a Giddings residence regarding a
child who was not breathing.
According to a media release provided today, Giddings Police
officers were summoned to meet EMS at a home on West
Independence Street, near Simmang Park. The call was placed at
approximately 2:10 P.M. on Saturday, February 9, 2013.
Upon arrival officers observed medics, with the local ambulance
service, attempting to revive a three-year-old boy, Dean Hodges.
Police reported that the child was on the floor and was
unresponsive. Officers also observed vomit on the floor and an
open, partially empty bottle of Tequila.
A resident at the home, 27-year-old Auston Shawn Tatum, advised
that he was currently the caretaker/guardian of Dean Hodges, as
well as Dean’s one-year-old sister - who was also at the
residence, according to police.
The child was rushed to St. Mark’s Medical Center in LaGrange
where he was pronounced deceased.
An autopsy was performed Sunday morning at the Travis County
Medical Examiner’s Office. The formal ruling as to the cause and
manner of death is pending the results of further investigation
in the case.
