Community bands together to help one of its own

Tuesday, March 16, 2010

People from this community and the surrounding area banded together Sunday to lend a hand to Don and Holly Schultz.

Don has been battling cancer and a benefit was organized to help defray his current and future medical expenses.

The event raised thousands of dollars, serving some 2335 plates of BBQ and hosting a live auction that began at 1 P.M., lasted past 6 P.M. and used the services of five area auctioneers. (Photo: Don and wife Holly after the event)

Other money was raised with a silent auction that featured items donated by businesses and individuals. Raffles for guns and a John Deere Gator were also held. Tickets for the Gator raffle can still be purchased by contacting Ernie Voight @ 979-542-3181.

Don and Holly are from the Giddings area and currently reside in the Paige community. They have one son. (Photo: Don with auctioneers and organizers of the event)

Don's many friends and his affiliations with the Giddings Volunteer Fire Department, the Paige Lions Club and the McDade Watermelon Festival and the GHS Class of 79, helped draw a huge crowd and make the event a big success.

St. Paul Serbin takes JV Championship

Tuesday, February 9, 2010

St. Paul Lutheran Serbin Boys took Championship at the annual Texas Athletic League of Lutheran Schools Junior Varsity Basketball tournament held in Giddings on Saturday, February 6.

The boys defeated Immanuel, Giddings in the first round and then faced Zion, Walburg for the Championship.  Walburg held on close behind Serbin throughout the game and tied it up in the last minute.  Serbin charged down the court and put up a few shots when Walburg fouled Blake Fritsche as he shot with no time left on the clock.  He missed the first shot but made the second giving Serbin the win with a score of 30 to 29.

The boys worked hard together and all assisted to end the season with a perfect winning record.  This is the first basketball championship for Serbin’s JV boys in at least ten years.  The team consisted of fifth and sixth graders and were coached by Serbin’s Athletic Director Mr. Chris Fritsche.
