Lady Buffs come up short in playoff round
Wednesday, November 4, 2009
The Giddings Volleyball team came up short Tuesday night falling in their matchup to Wharton in four games.
The squad battled in game one but the Lady Tigers took a 25-20 win. Giddings re-grouped to claim a game two victory finishing with a two-point advantage at 25-23.
Games three and four would prove to be more that the young team could handle as the ladies fell in finals of 25-16 and 25-9.
Giddings has a lot to look forward to with a team stacked with young, talented athletes. With only one senior in the mix they will likely return in 2010 with four seniors and three juniors. The group grew into a force as they battled back after losses and learned to work with Coach Durrenberger's offense.
Lady Buffs claim 2009 playoff slot
Wednesday, October 28, 2009
Correction: The Lady Buffs did appear in the 2000 playoffs
The Lady Buffs claimed the third slot in District 25-3A Tuesday night as they took down Sealy and gained the opportunity to enter the 2009 Volleyball playoffs.
The 10 member squad, coached by former Lady Buff Lindsey Durrenberger, ended a long post-season drought and will join Columbus and LaGrange to contend for a state title.
The Giddings squad worked quickly to end Tuesday night's matchup against Sealy finishing off the contest in three games.
The Lady Tigers battled in game one but Giddings overcame their late game attempt - edging out a 27-25 victory. The Lady Buffs overwhelmed Sealy in games two and three cruising to finals of 25-15 and 25-7.
Playoff action is set to begin next week; Giddings' coaches are currently finalizing game details. The Lady Buffs will likely play Wharton in Waller on Tuesday, November 3rd at 7:00 P.M.

The matchup, which begins at 7:00 P.M. in the GHS gym, is critical to the Lady Buffs playoff hopes. With a current district record of 4-5 the Giddings squad must defeat the Lady Tigers for a chance to enter post-season play.
Giddings, Bellville and Sealy have been vying for the third playoff spot behind Columbus and LaGrange.
Giddings was victorious over Sealy on October 9, defeating the Lady Tigers on their home court. The Lady Buffs had lost to Bellville in September but rallied past them when they met for the second time on October 16. Bellville subsequently lost to Sealy, an event that helped the Lady Buffs stay in contention.
If the Lady Buffs are able to clinch a slot in the playoffs it will be the first time in 21 years. The last time a Giddings volleyball team saw post-season action was in 1987.
Lady Buffs oust Bellville, Move to 3rd place in district at 4-3
Monday, October 19, 2009
The Lady Buffs volleyball team pulled off a big win Friday, ousting
Bellville in a four game match-up. The victory edged the team to a positive
district record and ever closer to a possible playoff appearance.
The girls lost game one to the Lady Brahmas, Head Coach Lindsey Durrenberger said, "we started off strong in game one playing point for point, but they pushed at the end to take a 19-25 win". The squad came out fired-up in game two claiming a win to tie the contest at one game apiece. "We served aggressively and had several big plays including big blocks by Cassidy Melcher, stated Coach Durrenberger. "We shut down their hitters and took the game 25-19". The squad rallied to win game three 25-23. According to Durrenberger, "the third game was crucial and we kept making big plays. Darrecia Johnson and Cassidy Melcher led the team in hitting and kept putting balls away". "Our momentum was strong going into the fourth game. We had a big lead at the end, but after a couple kills from Bellville's middle they were back in it. Our defense kept digging balls and we fought for the win 27-25 to take the match". Coach Durrenberger added, "This was a huge win for us and the girls finished with lots of momentum and emotion. The energy in the gym was great and the girls never gave up. I am very proud!". Because of the win the team is now in third place in district behind Columbus and LaGrange. Giddings will travel to meet No. 1 Columbus on Tuesday and then to LaGrange on Friday. This week's outings will be tough for the Lady Buffs who fell to both Columbus and LaGrange, who have strong club volleyball programs, in their first meetings earlier this month. Each of the two contests only went to three games. Stats
Cassidy Melcher had 16 kills, 9 errors and 5 blocks. Darrecia Johnson had
12 kills and 4 errors. Heather Belyeu had 7 kills and 1 error. Whitney
Keith had 27 digs and Alaina Dock had 14.

With more determination and fight that we've seen in many years the Lady Buffs volleyball squad, all three teams, rolled past Smithville and came home winners Tuesday night as they began competition in District 25-3A. (Photo: Freshman Alaina Dock working at the net)
The Varsity team dominated Smithville from the beginning, ultimately stunning their opponent and making their way to a 25-10 game-one victory.
The young, but capable, Buffs played a solid game-two pouring on the power with kill after kill. The girls played smart and were able to hit all the holes in the Smithville defense. The group has, for the most part, worked out recent problems with their serve, ace-ing the beleaguered Tigers who searched to find a solution. Game two ended with the Lady Buffs on top 25-15.
Game four was a battle - but it eventually proved which was the better of the two teams. Smithville was inconsistent and at times seemed sluggish. A final Giddings rally helped them to a 25-21 decision.
