2009 Giddings Buffaloes Roster
|
Giddings senior defensive back Corey Brite has been selected to the Texas Sports Writers Association's (TSWA) All State Team. Brite was acknowledged by the association as a first team defensive back in the 3A classification.
During the 2009 season Brite was responsible for 65 tackles, 15 of which resulted in a loss of yardage. He logged four sacks, had five interceptions, four caused fumbles, one fumble returned for a touchdown and a punt returned for a touchdown.
Earlier this year he received the award for the District 25-3A most valuable defensive player and was recently honored by the Austin American Statesman as a first team All Centex selection.

Coach Fitzhenry announced the schedule for the 2010 football season on Monday with key pre-district matchups listed against Brookshire Royal and West Orange-Stark. Both are teams the Buffs could face early in the playoffs.
Giddings will meet Burnet, Royal, LaVernia, and After an open week, they will begin district play

local football player has made a verbal commitment to play college
football next fall. Today's announcement means at least three from the
2009 Buffaloes squad will further their education and work to compete at
the next level. Cameron Williams, defensive end from Giddings High School has given a verbal commitment to play football for Midwestern State University in Wichita Falls, Texas. Cameron is the son of Blaine and Barbara Williams. As a two year letterman and 09 team captain for the Buffaloes, the (approximately) 200 lb. Williams often competed against opponents bigger than he. Williams worked hard and used his height, quickness, and strength as his advantage. (Photo: #99 Williams during the regular season finale against Columbus) Cameron and his parents express their thanks Coach Derek Fitzhenry and his coaching staff as well as the faculty and staff at GHS for all their support in his effort to further his education and play collegiate football. Three Lee County athletes named to Statesman's All-Decade Football Team Thursday, December 31, 2009 Three former Lee County athletes have been named to the Austin American Statesman's All-Decade Football team. The list was published Wednesday night, December 30th, and highlights one athlete from Lexington and two former Giddings Buffaloes. Michael Brown - Lexington Statesman writers Rick Cantu and Danny Davis picked Michael Brown, a 2009 Lexington graduate, to the first team offense and called him "arguably the best lineman of the decade". Brown, who was recruited by Ole Miss, was a three time All-Area first team honoree during his years with the Eagles.
Giddings proudly sends two names to the list, 2008 graduate Alan Dock and 2009 graduate Xavier Daniels.
Alan Dock - Giddings As a four year letterman Alan Dock did it all for the Buffaloes. The Statesman, however, placed him on the first team All-Decade defense and lauded him for his "All-State" job at linebacker. Dock who currently plays for the Golden Hurricane at Tulsa, was selected 3A Defensive Player of the year in 2006. At Giddings he was a team captain and leader in the linebacker position but also saw action as a fullback, punter, punt returner and deep snapper on extra points. During his career on defense he tallied 539 tackles, caused 25 fumbles, and logged 11 fumble recoveries.
Xavier Daniels - Giddings Known as simply "X" by his teammates and friends, Xavier Daniels was also selected to the All-Decade first team defense. The Statesman pointed out that Daniels led the area with 15 interceptions in 2008 and was the Class 3A defensive MVP during that same year. He worked hard on offense and defense at Giddings and excelled on the track as well. His speed and technique combined with his good nature and solid work ethic helped him earn this honor and a scholarship at Texas State University.
Buffaloes Mack and Brite make verbal commitments
Monday, December 21, 2009
According to a report from the Austin American Statesman Buffalo football players Marcellus Mack and Corey Brite have verbally committed to play football at UTSA in San Antonio. Mack hopes to play in the wide receiver spot while Brite is looking to help out in the defensive backfield.
Mack and Brite will be a part of UTSA's program building effort which was brought on by the college's push to add football to the other 16 sports programs that currently exist at UTSA.
According to a press release issued by UTSA earlier this year, the University of Texas System Board of Regents approved UTSA's Athletic Initiative Business Plan last December, which granted the university permission to add a football program.
The plan calls for UTSA to develop an $84 million competitive athletics complex, add an NCAA Football Championship Subdivision (FCS, formerly Division I-AA) football program with the intent to advance football and the athletics department's existing 16 intercollegiate programs to an NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS, formerly Division I-A) conference. According to the schools website, the football team is expected to take the field for competition in September 2011. UTSA is a member of the Southland Conference and will play home games at San Antonio's Alamodome. Other Texas schools that belong to the Southland Conference are Texas State, Sam Houston State, and Steven F. Austin.
Buffs fall to Brookshire Royal in playoff Round One Stats tell the story best
Tuesday, November 17, 2009
The Buffaloes ended their 2009 football season losing in a problem filled matchup to Brookshire Royal, 40-21.
Giddings got off to a rough start, giving up the ball with a fumble on the first play from scrimmage. The Falcons promptly put 14 unanswered points on the board.
Giddings continued the fight in the second quarter, but gave up another six points before managing a touchdown of their own. Giddings quarterback Conner Wehr found Corey Brite, completing a 15 yard touchdown pass for the score. The Buffs failed to add the extra point and went to the locker room down by 14, 20-6.
The Buffaloes struggled on both sides of the ball, failing to control the Falcon's ground game which wasn't consistent but was instead sporadically explosive. Mistakes on defense, combined with three lost fumbles, two interceptions, and an offense that was out-of-sync prevented the Buffaloes from mustering an adequate threat.
Giddings worked the ball effectively in the second half but turnovers left them with only 15 second-half points while Royal recorded another 20 for themselves.
Corey Brite took over most of the rushing duties for the Buffs who lost FB Eric Rimes to a knee injury. Brite was successful with two rushing touchdowns. A successful kick allowed the Buffs to narrow the gap to seven with a score of 26-19.
Royal scored again but Giddings quickly added a two-point safety. With a score of 33-21 Giddings rushed to score again, confidently making their way into the "red zone". RB Deladrick Britton scrambled to the left side making his way to the Royal five yard line. In a struggle to pickup extra yardage the ball was striped and a Royal defender rambled 95 yards for another touchdown and a 40-21 win.
The final game stats tell the real story. The Buffs amassed 367 total yards to Royal's 339. For Giddings it was 143 on the ground and 224 in the air. By contrast, the Falcons gained 106 yards in the air and 233 on the ground. Giddings logged 16 first downs to Royals 10.
Giddings gave up three of four fumbles, the Falcons fumbled twice but recovered and kept possession of the ball. Giddings gave up two interceptions while Royal allowed only one.
With the win Brookshire Royal advances to Round Two and will play Yoakum. Yoakum upset La Vernia and claimed the bi-district crown.

Buffs back on track after convincing win over Bellville
Monday, October 19, 2009
The Giddings Buffaloes football team put last week's loss to Sealy behind them and got back on track, pulling off a convincing win Friday over Bellville.
The squad jumped out and claimed the lead early in the first quarter, driving down to the Brahmas seven yard line. Fullback Eric Rimes managed to punch in a touchdown and Toby Bishop's kick gave the Buffs a 7-0 advantage.
The Buffs put points on the board in the second quarter as again Rimes rumbled through the Bellville line for a 3 yard score. Bishop's Kick was blocked and the Buffs left the field with a 13-0 halftime lead.
In the second half, Bellville came out more focused on their running game, which showed signs of limited success. The Brahmas drove down the field, ultimately scoring on a 1 yard quarterback sneak. The extra point brought the tally to 13-7.
Bellville threatened a couple of times in the fourth quarter but eventually gave the ball back to Giddings. A 77 yard touchdown run by quarterback Conner Wehr, late in the fourth quarter, all but sealed the deal for the Buffs.
Giddings put some big numbers in the books - racking up 348 total yards. Wehr threw for 141 yards, completing seven of 12 passes. Marcellus Mack caught two passes for 57 yards, David Bradshaw hauled in three for 44 yards, Corey Brite nabbed one pass for 32 yards and Lance Krause picked up eight yards on a single reception.
Wehr added 136 yards on the ground with one touchdown. Rimes logged 40 yards with two touchdowns, Brite managed 22 yards and Bradshaw claimed nine.
Both teams struggled to hold on to the ball, losing two fumbles apiece. Bellville also gave up two interceptions; Marcellus Mack and Deladrick Britton were on the receiving end of the "picks".
The Buffs began Saturday preparing for a tough test against undefeated LaGrange (6-0). The Leopards have so far posted two district wins, edging out victories of 10-7 over Bellville and 45-42 over Smithville. Video Highlights

Giddings slams Robinson in final non-district matchup
Saturday, October 3, 2009
Giddings slammed Robinson Friday night defeating the Rocket 62-14 in their final non-district outing.
The Buffaloes got off to a quick start when Robinson deferred the kickoff. The Buffs made their way down the the field capping off a successful drive with the first of nine touchdowns. Corey Brite scored on when he recovered Eric Rimes' fumble in the end zone. Toby Bishop added the kick and Giddings to a 7-0 lead.
Robinson failed in their first offensive attempt and the Buffs threatened immediately. Running back David Bradshaw managed to capitalize with a 12 yard touchdown run and Bishop's kick gave the team a 14-0 lead.
With 4:00 left in the first quarter the Buffs worked to put another mark on the board. QB Conner Wehr connected with Brite on a 38 yard touchdown pass. Bishop's kick was blocked by the Rockets and the lead moved to 20-0.
The Giddings defense was relentless in its pursuit of the Robinson quarterback and with 2:25 left in the 1st quarter their quest paid off. A Buffalo defender forced a fumble. With a quick scoop and a 48 yard touchdown scamper by Corey Brite the Buffs claimed a 27-0 1st quarter advantage.
The Giddings defense pounded the Rockets once again handing the ball over to Wehr and the increasingly aggressive Buffalo offense. Corey Brite pulled down another pass and found the end zone for a 23 yard score. Giddings led 34-0.
The Rockets finally scored on a three yard run and the half ended with the Buffs on top 34-7.
Robinson took the second half kickoff scoring within the first three minutes of the quarter. They added an extra point and the tally moved to 34-14.
Giddings managed three more scores in the 3rd quarter - Rimes and Bradshaw capitalize on the run and Deladrick Britton scored when he returned an interception for a 30 yard touchdown.
The squad moved to the 4th quarter and scored once more using players from the second and third strings. A late game touchdown by Elias Adame sealed a 62-14 Buffalo victory.
Stats: Once again the Buffs offered a diverse offensive attack.
Wehr completed nine of 16 passes for 156 with one interception. On the ground, Giddings recorded 167 yards rushing on 43 attempts.
Corey Brite led the receiving effort for Giddings with four receptions totaling 76 yards. Marcellus Mack pulled down two catches for 48 yards and Bradshaw had two receptions of 29 yards. Full back Eric Rimes led the ground game for the Buffaloes with 44 yards on nine carries. Wehr hustled 36 yards on seven carries and Bradshaw managed 18 yards on three attempts.
The Giddings defense gave up 202 yards in the air but held the Rockets to -17 yards on the ground. The Buffs allowed only nine Robinson first downs and the Rockets punted four times for and average of 41 yards. Robinson lost four of five fumbles and gave up three interceptions.
Giddings will begin conference play next Friday, facing undefeated Sealy on the road.
Buffaloes overwhelm Elgin, stay undefeated
Tuesday, September 29, 2009
The Buffaloes remained undefeated Friday night, virtually overwhelming Elgin (1-4) in a 26-3 decision.
The Wildcats struggled from the outset as Giddings methodically worked their way down the field, scoring on the opening drive. The Buffaloes took a 6-0 lead early in the game when RB Corey Brite grabbed a fumble and scored from the three yard line. Jeremias Delgado added a kick and Giddings took a seven point first quarter advantage.
Elgin threatened in the 2nd quarter driving to the Buffaloes 10 yard line. Giddings managed to contain the surge, allowing a 27 yard Wildcat field goal.
Corey Brite added another touchdown for the Buffs with a 26 yard breakaway run. Delgado's kick was blocked and Giddings moved to a 13-3 lead. Marcellus Mack snagged an 11 yard touchdown pass but the attempt for a two-point conversion was unsuccessful and the Buffs went to the break with a 19-3 lead.
Quarterback Conner Wehr punched in a final score in the 3rd quarter and the contest ended with the Buffs in control 26-3.
The Buffaloes put together a diversified offensive attack, claiming 221 yards in the air and 189 yards on the ground, 410 yard collectively.
Basically, Elgin brought no offense. The Buffs held the Wildcats to 154 total yards with only six first-downs and no touchdowns. The Wildcats were out played on both sides of the ball and tempers flared as a result.
A stout Buffalo defense reined-in the sporadic, undisciplined Wildcat scheme.
An overly aggressive Buffalo offense was plagued by penalties. If not for these mental errors the game would have likely been a blowout. As things heated up each team had players ejected because of un-sportsman-like-conduct penalties. Giddings also struggled with illegal procedure calls.
Team Stats: Corey Brite rushed for 47 yards on 6 attempts and had two touchdowns. Eric Rimes logged 40 yards on nine carries and Deladrick Britton ran three times for nine yards.
QB Conner Wehr rushed for 93 yards on 15 carries and completed 14 of 21 passes for 221 yards.
Wide receiver Marcellus Mack hauled in seven passes for 70 yards and one touchdown. Deladrick Britton managed two passes for 61 yards and Lance Krause handled two for 39 yards. FB Eric Rimes grabbed one pass for a 27 yard gain, Dominique Jordan added one reception for 21 yards and Spencer Fitzhenry caught a single pass for three yards.
The win has the Buffaloes looking ahead to Robinson and their 2009 Homecoming. Giddings will face off with the Rockets on the home field before traveling to Sealy on October 9th to begin District 25-3A competition.

Buffs move up one notch in statewide football poll: Other teams shifted up, down and out
Tuesday, September 22, 2009
The Giddings Buffaloes football team moved up in the TexasFootball.com 3A poll this week, despite the fact that they had an "open" week.
Giddings jumped from #5 to #4 after West Orange-Stark, who was previously ranked #4, was upset by unranked Jasper (2-1).
The Buffs stand at #4 behind: #1 Gilmer (4-0), #2 Carthage (4-0) and #3 Abilene Wylie (3-0).
Bellville plunged to #13 from #6 after losing to Navasota. As a result of their win Navasota jumped into the #11 spot.
Sealy (4-0) moved up to the #20 position (from #24) and previously unranked LaGrange (4-0) fell into the #22 slot. The Leopard held Gonzales to only a field goal during their lopsided 47-3 victory.
As they struggle to come up with a consistent game, both offensively and defensively, Liberty Hill was dropped from the Top 25 altogether. They had been ranked #13 in the magazine's online preseason poll. Complete Poll: 5A-1A
Buffs get the job done, bring home win #3
Sunday, September 13, 2009
It wasn't pretty but the Buffs got the job done again Friday night, claiming win number three, out-playing Wharton in a 35-6 decision.
The Buffs got on the board early as running back David Bradshaw capitalized on a successful touchdown run from the 10 yard line. Jererimas Delgado added an extra point and Giddings took a 7-0 lead.
Buffalo running back Corey Brite managed to score the second touchdown on a 15 yard run. Another extra point by Delgado earned them a 14-0 1st quarter lead.
The Buffs called on the services of several of their talented runners allowing Deladrick Britton to score a nine yard touchdown on his only carry of the game. A strong defensive stand gave Giddings another opportunity and quarterback Conner Wehr connected with Marcellus Mack for a 64 yard score. Both touchdowns were followed by successful kicks by Delgado and Giddings went in at halftime with a 28-0 lead.
Giddings scored once more when Wehr ran the ball in from the 17 yard line in the 3rd quarter. Wehr carried 14 times for 36 yards and completed nine of 20 passes for 187 yards.
Substitutions and a few errors on the part of the Buffaloes kept the contest from being an all-out "route". Wharton eventually scored in the 4th quarter, finally punching it in from the 6 yard line.
The Giddings squad posted 173 yards on a total of 22 rushes. David Bradshaw carried seven times for 74 yards, Corey Brite added 45 yards on four carries and Eric Rimes logged 17 yards on five carries. Spencer Fitzhenry ran the ball one time for a four yard gain.
Wide receiver Marcellus Mack hauled in five passes for 124 yards. Lance Krause had two catches for 30 yards, David Bradshaw pulled down one pass for a 30 yard gain and Corey Brite gained three yards on a single reception.
The Buffaloes came home with a perfect 3-0 record despite playing what was reportedly a less-than-perfect game.
The Tiger offense was unable to score until the 4th quarter, losing four of five fumbles to the Buffalo defense. Wharton also lost the ball twice on interceptions. Wharton remains winless at 0-3.
The team will use this "open week" to recover from injuries and to prepare themselves for their September 25th match up against Elgin (1-2). The 4A Wildcats have struggled in the opening weeks of the season, losing to Travis (AISD) and Taylor, but defeating Lanier (AISD).

Buffs manage last minute rally, battle through 4th quarter serge by La Varnia
Monday, September 7, 2009
The Buffs outlasted a 45 minute lightning delay and a 4th quarter serge by La Vernia to claim win-number-two of their 2009 title run.
Quarterback Conner Wehr led the Buffs with a running attack, handling the ball 15 times for 152 yards. Wehr proved he has more than just a passing game, averaging just over 10 yards per carry and a total of four touchdowns.
Fullback Eric Rimes followed Wehr's lead, collecting 121 yards on 18 carries. David Bardshaw logged 21 yards on three tries and Corey Brite managed 23 yards on two attempts.
Wehr completed three of (only) seven passes for 55 yards. Dominique Jordan was the receiving standout for the Buffs, hauling in two clutch catches, , in the final minute of the game. Jordan's 33 yard, two catch, effort allowed Giddings to go-ahead with only seconds left to play and claim the win.
The Bears scored first on a 35-yard pass play that took place on their second possession of the game. They added a kick and took a 7-0 lead.
Giddings put together a successful drive of their own, scoring on a seven yard touchdown run by QB Conner Wehr. Delgado's kick was good and the Buffs ended the quarter tied at 7-7.
The Buffs left another mark on the board, as Wehr scored and the team went to the locker room with a 14-7 lead.
La Vernia scored early in the third quarter, capitalizing on a pass interference call and tying the game 14-14.
Giddings struck back twice before a 45-minute lightning delay, capturing a (confident) 26-14.
Once the weather warning was lifted the Bears went right to work, scoring 14 points and taking a 27-26 lead - late in the 4th quarter.
Marcellus Mack returned the ensuing kick-off to the La Vernia 33-yard line, where Wehr and company worked quickly for a 'go-ahead" score. WR Dominique Jordan caught two passes, scoring on the second catch as the Buffs took a 32-27 lead. Wehr added a two-point conversion and the Buffs held on for a 34-27 win.

Buffs win big over Liberty Hill, prepare to host La Vernia
Wednesday, September 2, 2009
Giddings celebrated a huge shut-out victory over Liberty Hill Friday night, but were already at work on Saturday morning preparing for their new opponent, La Vernia.
The Buffaloes managed a 25-0 win, thrashing the Panthers in a scoreless defeat, something that hasn't happened to the Panthers in years. Liberty Hill has been riding high for several years with a lot of talented athletes. This year Giddings was bigger, stronger and quicker making the task for the Panthers virtually insurmountable.
Coach Derek Fitzhenry said he saw a few problems that needed to be worked out, but overall he was very satisfied with his squad's performance.
The addition of quarterback Conner Wehr added to the already stout offensive attack for the Buffaloes. Wehr managed to complete 6 of 15 passes for 157 yards and two touchdowns. He also knocked out 107 yards rushing on 13 carries.
Running back David Bradshaw rushed for one touchdown and caught a pass from Wehr for another. Fullback Eric Rimes carried 10 times for 56 yards and one touchdown.
Wide receiver Marcellus Mack had four receptions for 104 yards and one touchdown.
Due to issues with the 25 second clock, Giddings was penalized nine times for 65 yards. The Buffs also gave-up one fumble in the first quarter.
The Panthers, who were missing their top rusher Ryan Fickle - out with a knee injury, logged only 138 yards rushing on 44 carries. Liberty Hill attempted one pass which floated well out of the reach of its intended receiver.
The Giddings defense overwhelmed Liberty Hill allowing them only one scoring opportunity, a 27 yard field goal that sailed wide to the right.
Friday the Buffs will host La Vernia in their home opener at Buffalo Stadium. The Bears are coming off a 16-7 road victory over Bandera. La Vernia managed one touchdown and three field goals against the Bulldogs. For LaVernia, the lone touchdown came on a 89 yard run by junior quarterback Seth Grubb.
Giddings met La Vernia for the first time last season. The Buffaloes were successful, controlling the Bears in a 53-28 win.

Buffs
scrimmage Rockdale SaturdaySaturday, August 15, 2009 Buffs QB Conner Wehr put it in the air at least two-dozen times during Saturday's scrimmage against No. 15 Rockdale. Wehr seemed patient in the pocket and threw confidently when on the run. Senior
wide receiver Marcellus Mack was on the receiving end of several passes
Saturday. Mack played on offense as well as defense.
On
defense the Buffs started off slow but were on track by the second
series. One
of the bright spots on defense was the aggressive play of senior
linebacker Colby Wollin. Statesman includes Giddings in 2009 Football Power Poll Buffs expect to thrive despite the loss of key players Sunday, August 9, 2009 While the Buffaloes put on their pads Saturday morning and went to work preparing for next Saturday's scrimmage against Rockdale and the eventual season opener against Liberty Hill, the Austin American Statesman hit the newsstand highlighting the No. 8 team in its Central Texas Top 10 countdown. Giddings filled the No. 8 spot in the publication's "2009 Preseason Football Power Poll" which, so far, includes teams in classes 3A -5A. The paper began its countdown with Liberty Hill last Thursday, the Panthers were slotted at No. 10 in the rankings. The 4A Kangaroos of Killeen took the No. 9 position and the Buffs were featured Saturday at No. 8. Today's edition includes the first 5A squad to be recognized with Cedar Park at No. 7. While the Statesman pointed to several Buffalo standouts in Saturday's article, they missed the mark, obviously doing little or no research to reveal the changes at the "ever-important" quarterback position. The paper featured a 2008 photo of last year's starting quarterback Rush Plumlee and listed Trey Masek, who finished the 2008 season at quarterback for the Buffaloes, as a "Hello" player to watch. Neither of the two are playing football this year, choosing instead to focus on baseball. The exit of Plumlee, who moved back to the linebacker position late in 2008, leaves quite a gap in the defensive backfield. No doubt the Buffs are looking for a heavy-hitter to fill in where Plumlee left off. Saturday morning coaches used an inner-squad scrimmage to test players at different positions and work on a handful of plays, moving the ball both on the ground and in the air. As we pointed out Monday the Buffaloes are expecting big things from a host of talented performers. Returning offensive standouts include junior running backs Eric Rimes and David Bradshaw. The entrance of the new quarterback, Conner Wehr can only add to the offensive scheme, hopefully allowing Corey Brite and Marcellus Mack more opportunities on the receiving end of the ball. Questions remain for positions on the offensive and defensive lines. Giddings will have to find personnel who can step-up and into vacancies left by graduates Mason Urban, Zach Berry, Tomas Perez, Dillon Weiser and Matt Tomas. Coach Fitzhenry and his staff are already working overtime to find and train athletes who can pick up the slack. Week one of two-a-day workouts acted as both a method of conditioning and position "try-outs" for the athletes. Players have been moved into and out of various positions in an effort to uncover the right man for each job. Despite the few uncertainties, is there really any doubt the Buffs will be ready? Giddings is well coached, fast, and talented. Above all they've been trained to think big and they "expect to win". Two-a-day

record-breaking season.

ranked No. 6 in State by Dave Campbell's Texas Football MagazineWednesday, June 17, 2009 The Giddings Buffaloes football team is ranked No. 6 In the state according to Dave Campbell's Texas Football magazine. The magazine, which hit newsstands on Monday, is celebrating its 50th Anniversary. (Photo: # 20 FB Eric Rimes vs. Bellville - TFM Preseason District 25 Offensive MVP) The publication first went into circulation in 1960 and post coverage of 1,300 Texas High Schools, collegiate, and even NFL football. UT quarterback Colt McCoy is the lone "coverboy" for this the Golden Anniversary Edition. While the magazine picked Giddings to finish in the state's number six slot, they expect Bellville to win the District 25 3A title. The Brahmas, whose longtime coach Huey Chancellor left to take a position at Longview Pine Tree, are ranked 7th in state. Bellville has not yet announced a coaching replacement. Sports writer Dennis Hall offers Giddings as the Region 4 number one team. Hall wrote " if you enjoy a power running game, Giddings is the team for you". Hall went on to highlight Giddings' powerful fullback Eric Rimes, who, last year, racked up over 1,800 yards rushing and had 20 touchdowns ...as a sophomore. Hall quoted Coach Fitzhenry who said "Rimes is bigger and stronger this year". Hall mentioned both Buffalo quarterbacks from the 2008 season, saying that both Plumlee and Masek rushed for over 1,000 yards last year. The magazine's coverage of the Giddings squad ended by pointing out that "speedster" Corey Brite is expected to fill the gap left by last year's 3A Defensive Player of the Year, Xavier Daniels. Texas Football magazine lists FS Corey Brite, WR Marcellus Mack, DT Ryan Scrima, LB Colby Wollin, and ROV Cameron Williams as players to watch. RB Eric Rimes got the nod as the top junior while Spenser Fitzhenry is suggested as the Buffs top sophomore. Eric Rimes is the publications pick as the District 25 Preseason Offensive MVP. Other predictions from Campbell and staff The most recent nemesis of the Buffs, Liberty Hill, is predicted to finish 13th with only one starter returning on offense and three on defense. Don't count the Panthers out though, Coach Vance usually produces a formidable squad. Current district rival Bellville returns five this year on offense and seven on defense. Senior quarterback Kyle Mueller is expected to spread the ball around and the Brahmas are loaded with solid running backs ...but the coaching question remains. LaGrange, picked third in district just behind Giddings, will work off their "strong-armed", highly touted senior quarterback Josh Schneider (6'0", 195 lb.). Schneider, the son of Leopard's assistant coach Steve Schneider, threw for over 1500 yards and logged 15 touchdowns. The Leopards return eight starters on offense and and seven on defense. Others guesses: LaVernia - expected to finish first in District 27 Wharton - a fourth place finish is predicted Elgin - third in District 17-4A, behind (big schools) Buda Hays and Lockhart Robinson - writers anticipate a third place finish for the Rockets Sealy - fourth in Dist. 25, the unpredictable Dexter Downey is back Smithville - fifth place in district in front of the Cardinals Columbus - last in district, no post season action again
