You Make The Call

At Saturday's game against Wimberley Giddings forward Kayla Winkfield attempted to score after picking-off the opponent's inbound pass with only 5.4 seconds left to play in the first overtime. The teams were tied at 59, a made basket or free throw would have likely allowed Giddings the win. The girls had to beat Wimberley and the refs to advance.

Lady Buffs await next opponent, prepare for playoffs with practice game against Moulton

Monday, February 15, 2010

Gonzales placed second to Cuero in District 28-3A, while Somerset fell into the third place slot in District 27-3A behind SA Sam Houston and Marion. Gonzales and Somerset play tonight, details of the Area round game for the Lady Buffs will be available on Tuesday.

Lady Buffs 4-0 for week, win Lorena Tournament

Tuesday, December 8, 2009

Squad off to a positive 8 & 0 start

The Lady Buffs Basketball team remained undefeated throughout their games this past week taking on Hallettsville and winning the Lorena Tournament.

On December 1st the girls traveled to Hallettsville and came away with a hard fought 59-52 victory over a scrappy Lady Brahma team. The Lady Buffs were up by 11 at the end of the third and held off a late rally for the win.  Scoring for the Lady Buffs were:  Jena Meuth, 12; Caitie Carney and Allyson Roberts, 10; Maegen Bradley and Cassidy Melcher, 7; Kayla Winkfield, 6; Darrecia Johnson, 4; and Alex Masek, 3. (Photo: Jena Meuth, Sr.)

On Thursday, the Lady Buffs traveled to Lorena to play two rounds in one day due to Lorena being in the football playoffs.  Teams competing in the tournament were China Spring, Crawford, Mexia, Groesbeck, West, Salado, Giddings, and host Lorena.  Giddings opened up at 1:30 with Groesbeck and cruised over the outmatched Lady Goats 63-13.  Scoring for the Lady Buffs were:  Alex Masek, 11; Heather Belyeu, 10; Kayla Winkfield and Allyson Roberts, 8; Cassidy Melcher and Darrecia Johnson, 7; Maegen Bradley, 6; Jordan Masek, Jena Meuth, and Victoria Mathis, 2.

Giddings rested some players for the second game which did not begin until 8:30 P.M. versus host Lorena.  The host team was fired up and came out and took a 14-10 first quarter lead.  The Lady Buffs outscored the home team 21-14 in the second to take a 31-28 lead at the half.  Giddings came out and had some turnovers and missed scoring opportunities which lead to Lorena taking a 46-39 lead after three.  “We got down but I never lost confidence in our young ladies”, said Coach Essman, “they have the ability to come back on people and we made a run in the fourth to get the win.” (Photo: Darrecia Johnson, So.)

The Lady Buffs topped the determined Lady Leopards 26-11 in the fourth for a 65-57 victory putting them into the championship game on Saturday, December 5th. The Lady Buffs played tough "pressure" defense and attacked the basket for numerous free throw opportunities; they were 21 of 34 from the line.  “Playing in the part of the bracket with the host team you figure they thought they could beat us that why we were there”, noted Coach Essman, “I am proud of our effort to come back.”  Scoring for the Lady Buffs were:  Jena Meuth and Kayla Winkfield, 15; Darrecia Johnson, 11;  Alex Masek, 7;  Jordan Masek and Cassidy Melcher, 6;  Maegen Bradley, 3; Caitie Carney, 2.

Playing two games on Thursday meant the Lady Buffs did not have to play on Friday as they had already qualified for the championship game. The girls faced an enthused Lady Eagle team who wanted some pay back for last year’s loss to Giddings in their warm-up game before the playoffs.  The state ranked Lady Eagles were a state semifinalist in 2A with all their starters returning except one who got injured in volleyball.

The Lady Buffs were also without the services of senior point guard Jordan Masek who did not play in the game. Salado and Giddings fought through some jitters to a 5-5 tie at the end of the first quarter. “We were playing hard defense, they were playing hard defense, it seemed it was going to be a low scoring defense struggle”, said Coach.  The Lady Buffs outscored Salado 17-13 in the second to take a 22-18 lead into the locker room.  Giddings stayed in control of the game the rest of the way taking a 41-32 lead after three and fending off a late rally for the 55-51 win.  “They hit some long threes at the end and shot 79 percent from the free throw line, they definitely could shoot,” stated Coach Essman.  Kayla Winkfield was named tourney MVP and Jena Meuth was named to the all-tournament team  Scoring for the Lady Buffs were:  Jena Meuth, 16; Kayla Winkfield, 15; Darriecia Johnson, 10; Alex Masek, 5; Cassidy Melcher, 4; Heather Belyeu and Caitie Carney, 2;  Allyson Roberts, 1.

“Our younger players are stepping up and contributing and that is a big plus for our team right now”, noted Coach, “the experience they are getting is going to pay off for us later on down the road.”

Lady Buffs win first four, work together to control competition

Sunday, November 29, 2009

The Lady Buffs basketball team is off to one of their best starts ever after winning their first four games in a seemingly trouble-free fashion. The ladies squad has taken down Rockdale, Waller, Weimar and Hempstead, outscoring their competition 275 to 121. (Photo: No. 11 Heather Belyeu)

3A Rockdale

The season began at home against Rockdale as the Lady Buffs streaked past the sluggish Lady Tigers 55-11. Jena Meuth and Darrecia Johnson led the scoring for Giddings with 11 points apiece. Kayla Winkfield followed with nine; while Cassidy Melcher, Allyson Roberts and Jordan Masek each sank six. Maegan Bradley and Heather Belyeu rounded out the scoring effort; Bradley collected four while Belyeu managed two.

4A Waller

The Lady Buffs then took the show on the road, pounding the host team Waller with a final score of 53-32. Kayla Winkfield led the effort for Giddings, draining 17 of the Buff's 53 points. Jena Meuth followed with 10 points and Darrecia Johnson logged seven. Maegan Bradley managed five, Cassidy Melcher hit for four and Heather Belyeu claimed three. Caitie Carney, Jordan Masek and Alex Masek added two points apiece while Allyson Roberts finished with one.

2A Weimar

Next, Giddings met Weimar in a game that had to be rescheduled because of  volleyball and football playoff conflicts earlier in November. The Lady Buffs slammed the Lady Cats outscoring their 2A opponent almost three-to-one in the 72-25 victory.

Jena Meuth led all scoring with 16 points while Allyson Roberts knocked down 15. Darrecia Johnson followed with nine points as Cassidy Melcher and Maegan Bradley racked up eight each. Caitie Carney and Kayla Winkfield managed four points each, Victoria Mathis and Heather Belyeu managed three apiece while Alex Masek added two.

2A Hempstead

Jena Meuth and Kayla Winkfield combined for 48 points, 24 each, to stuff the Hempstead squad with a final of 85-53. The Lady Buffs went in at halftime with an eight point advantage but finished with a 32 point spread. (Photo: No. 32 Kayla Winkfield)

Cassidy Melcher knocked down 12 points and Jordan Masek followed with 11. Maegan Bradley hit for six points while Darrecia Johnson added four. Caitie Carney and Heather Belyeu logged two each.

2009-2010 Lady Buffs

The Lady Buff have a bench loaded with well-rounded talent. Strong senior leadership provided by Jena Meuth, Jordan Masek, and Maegan Bradley is complimented by the speed and quickness of young players Kayla Winkfield and Darrecia Johnson. Add in the height and size options provided by juniors Cassidy Melcher and Caitie Carney and sophomore Allyson Roberts and the Lady Buffs should be able to stack up well against most any opponent.

So far the team has shown a diversified offensive attack that has racked-up an average of nearly 69 points per game. A strong defensive effort has allowed, on the average, just over 30 points a game. The squad, coached again this year by Lee Essman, has controlled each of their challengers, flooring the appropriate talent each game to get the job done.

Next up: Tuesday the group will travel to Hallettsville to face the Lady Brahmas then to Lorena for tournament play in the Leopard Invitational.
